Feng Shui can seem pretty simple to learn. All you have to do is a Google search and apply those Feng Shui tips on arrangements and remedies, and you’re done. Right?
No, Feng Shui is not as simple as that.
Most of the tips you see on the web (including those that you see on this site authored by me) only give you bits and pieces of digestible information. They are easy to follow and make Feng Shui seem easy to practice.
But Feng Shui is not that simple. Really.
If you try to Feng Shui yourself without enough knowledge, you are likely to overlook many important Feng Shui rules and readings. As a result, the cures and arrangements that you apply won’t produce any of the promised Feng Shui benefits. You might get discouraged and think that Feng Shui doesn’t work.
However, Feng Shui DOES work. That is why I constantly urge people to find an expert instead of doing it themselves.
But you might be thinking: when is a good time to consult with a Feng Shui Expert? Or do you even need one?
The ultimate decision is really up to you. However, if you see the following symptoms, I suggest that you find consult with an expert right away.
13 “Symptoms” That Indicates You Need a Feng Shui Audit of Your home
The point here is to make observations about what’s happening in your life. Ask yourself: is there anything unusual that is happening?
For instance, Simon Chan, a Feng Shui consultant in Toronto, has provided guidance on when you need a Feng Shui consultation. I have included them below (in italics) with a few comments, explanations, and additions of my own.
1. Many unexpected things happened suddenly without any reason or indication.
Ask yourself: After moving to a new house, did many unexpected undesirable events start happening? Did they happen frequently or were these events concentrated within a specific time (or year)? These events can include anything, such as unexpected large expenses, lawsuits, accidents, health, relationships going sour, and other things listed below.
2. When you are changing job and/or moving your office.
When you are switching jobs, you will be faced with uncertainty. Feng Shui for career can help you with job search and assist you to move upward in certain industries. For instance, a consultation revealed that my house assists the occupant in industries related to real estate (Earth) and technology and computers (Fire). (Note: It is also a good idea to check out your Bazi so you pick a more suitable career path where money chases you instead of you chasing money.)

As for office, I’ve heard of countless stories where Feng Shui brought the business down or boosted the business tremendously. You may have witnessed restaurants getting less busy when they expanded its internal space. Or, you may have noticed that different companies keep failing in the same office space.
Office Feng Shui is quite different, so make sure that the consultant you hire has experience in this field.
3. Outside your house, there is a new building or a bridge being constructed, the removal of a big tree, large boulders, or the construction of a new swimming pool.
Often times, new construction outside a residential property would change the Feng Shui of that property. This is based on Luan Tou, or Form Feng Shui, which some experts have neglected to mention.
For instance, a bridge located right outside your property is not the best Feng Shui. In Taiwan, some experts suggest placing the Mountain Sea Town drawing as a cure for this negative Form Feng Shui.

Although I have doubts on the efficacy of this cure, it is better than nothing. For me, the real cure is undoable, which is to remove that bridge. Or, you can always move to another place and have a fresh start!
4. Before moving in to a new house or apartment.
When you’re in a luck period (which can be calculated by Bazi using your date and time of birth), chances are that you will move into a house with good Feng Shui. However, there is a chance that you can select a house that’s not suitable for you.
Because the effects of Feng Shui are tremendous in certain periods of time, I suggest that you don’t leave this to chance. Feng Shui is under our control, so why not take out the risk and use it to your advantage?
6. Crisis of losing a normally secure and steady job.
When you or a family member suddenly loses a steady job, many things could be at play. In terms of Feng Shui, it could be the areas that govern your social relationship, career, and even wealth. To reveal the root cause, a full Feng Shui audit of the house is required.
7. Family members start to have health issues.
Sometimes serious health issues just pop-up that make absolutely no sense. I feel strongly about this because that’s what happened to my parents. Both were living extremely healthy lives and were very disciplined on their diet. However, both are now cancer survivors. (They’re great now!)
8. Arguments between husband and wife happen more frequently.
I’ll reveal this. In my home, there’s the untimely [4,3] located in my bedroom section. According to a Flying Star Feng Shui master, it indicates opportunities for arguments between husband and wife, liver and limb problems.
From my own observations, it is true that me and my girlfriend (now ex) get into unnecessary arguments more frequently after moving in to this house together. I can’t explain why. Perhaps both our stress levels have increased? Or perhaps it was Feng Shui doing the trick?
9. Numerous accidents happened to family members.
Accidents can come in many forms in different severity. For instance, in spring of 2017, I suffered random cuts on my left arm and sprained my right wrist that took me 2 months to heal. I haven’t looked into it, but I’m guessing there was an affliction where my limbs will be harmed. In terms of Eight Mansions, the Five Ghosts or Huo Hai area can cause these problems.
As for larger accidents, a drunk driver can run his car into a home’s garage, as indicated by this Xuan Kong Flying Star case study. For that to happen, the timing and the star combinations have to align.
10. Family members are suffering from sleeping problems.
Bedroom Feng Shui has a lot to do with sleep. However, sometimes it could be other things at play. For instance, I’ve heard stories of children not being able to sleep at night because they were disturbed by “something.” This could be caused by the Line of Spiritual Gates.

To identify this, you’ll need the help of an experienced Feng Shui expert.
11. The children in the house are failing at school or loss of concentration in their study.
Feng Shui has the ability to influence the academics of your children. Too much positive energy can cause the kid to be overly active, causing concentration problems. Too little energy, or negative energy, can also produce the same result. Again, you’ll need experience to be able to identify this.
[insert image – Lucky bamboos placed at the Wen Chang area can boost academics.]
As for improving children’s academics, remember how I mentioned the placement of the four lucky bamboos at the Wen Chang area? That’s one way to boost the learnings abilities of you and your children.
12. Family members like to wander away from home.
In an article about kitchen Feng Shui rules, I mentioned that the Feng Shui of an outdoor kitchen can cause family members to wander away. This can mean that family members are far apart, making reunions difficult.
However, having an outdoor kitchen is just one Feng Shui setup. Other types of setup may only be visible to the trained eyes.
13. Many “uneasy” feeling at the house.
Like the others mentioned above, there could be many other forces at play here. There could be bad forms in the house, such as slanted ceiling or beams on top of where you rest. Or, there could be small interior poison arrows leading directly to your bedroom. Further, you may be surrounded by places with Yin Yang imbalance, such as graveyards, hospitals, or other Feng Shui hazards.
14. Frequent bursts of bad temper and changing of moods.
Feng Shui can affect your emotions and temper. Aside from noise, the front door, bedroom, and kitchen setup all have the ability to cause mood swings.
As for Eight Mansions, the Total Loss area is usually the culprit, as it is known to cause emotional instability. However, hou’ll have to see where this area is located at based on both the Kua of the house and you.
Getting a Feng Shui Audit is Like Getting a Health Exam
Do you only visit a doctor only when you’re sick? If not, you’re just like me. Both you and I know that this is not the smartest way to stay healthy.
Just like health-checkups, a Feng Shui audit of your home can help you find out if your home has good or bad Feng Shui. The audit should include proper Feng Shui cures and arrangements if problems are identified as well as suggest changes for enhancements to boost your luck.
The same idea can help you answer whether you really NEED a Feng Shui consultation.
If you’re like me, and if you’re feeling healthy, happy, and content with your life, you probably don’t need a Feng Shui consultation.
But if you’re one of those people who like to take preventive measures so the 14 symptoms above don’t happen to you, then I suggest you get a Feng Shui consultation. AND, on top of that, I’d suggest that you get an annual update on the Flying Star Annual Afflictions.

That’s because the annual afflictions can be quite powerful, which is based on the relationship between time and space. When the time comes and when the stars “align”, things CAN happen. This story about a drunk driver driving into someone’s garage is a good case study of when the stars “align”, even though the house wasn’t located on a T-junction.
Even If Life is Good, It’s Still a Good Idea to Do a Checkup
The idea here is really about being proactive or reactive. If you want to be reactive, the 14 symptoms mentioned earlier can happen and could get worse.
But the 14 symptoms mentioned earlier are just a few effects of bad Feng Shui. Feng Shui can affect you in a variety of ways, and what if something more serious happens to you?
For instance, in my ebook, I used what happened to my family as an example. Both my parents suffered from cancer, and a Feng Shui master warned them to move immediately or else they’ll have to go to the surgery room in the near future again. (In 3-4 years, my mom had two surgeries while my dad had one major surgery.)
The fortunate part of my family’s story was that they were proactive in health checkups. They didn’t let the cancer to develop, and the surgeries were quite successful.
The same concept applies to whether you need a Feng Shui consultation. You can hold off on a consultation if your life is great.
BUT, you can only be reactive for so long, because time brings changes to your life. At some point, I’d suggest you have an expert to audit the Feng Shui of your dwelling to prevent unfortunate events from happening to you.
Conclusion
Feng Shui is within our control, so why not take advantage of it? Instead of having it bring us down, why not use it to boost our quality of living?
Problems come in many different form and shape, and the 14 symptoms above are only a few problems that bad Feng Shui can bring. When you engage with a Feng Shui consultant, be sure to reveal the problems you’re facing (and you’re goals) so he could narrow down and focus on helping you get the most out of your home’s Feng Shui.
